“The 999th Night,” inspired by the tales of “One Thousand and One Nights,” centers on the conflicting and turbulent relationship between the cobbler Maruf and his witch-like, harsh wife. Maruf is a poor shoemaker, while his wife Fatma works for wealthy families, washing their feet — and taking out all her frustration on her husband: scolding, beating, and tormenting him.

In despair, Maruf raises his hands to the heavens, asking God to free him from this misery — and suddenly finds himself in the palace of the Shah. It turns out that the dreams of the poor unexpectedly coincide with the desires of the great ruler himself.

In the finale, the director emphasizes that love stands above wealth. The performance avoids labeling characters as “good” or “evil,” instead hinting that life is a game full of conditions and contradictions. Good and Evil are shown not as inherent traits, but as consequences of one’s actions — an essential message for the ending.

In the end, the audience is reminded that even “Witch Fatma” is still a beloved creation of the Almighty.
As this story corresponds to the 999th tale told by Scheherazade in “One Thousand and One Nights,” the creative team titled the performance “The 999th Night.”
